Settling a loved one's estate.
During this difficult time, you can count on compassionate financial guidance every step of the way.
We're here to help you move forward after a loss.
If you're handling the financial details for someone you care about, it's understandable to feel overwhelmed, especially while navigating the emotions that come with their passing. You don't have to go through this process alone—we're here to help provide the clarity, guidance, and support you need.
A few important steps to begin the inheritance process with confidence.
-
Notify us (and anyplace else where the person had an account) as soon as you can. We'll secure their Schwab account(s) and prepare to work with the estate. All you need is their name and account number.
To get started, contact Schwab Estate Services at 1-888-297-0244, prompt 2.
-
You'll want to locate all important documents—both printed and digital—that you'll need to handle financial matters like obtaining benefits, managing financial accounts, and settling the estate.
Our Asset Inventory Worksheet will help you gather the documents you'll need to settle your loved one's affairs.
-
For eligible clients, you can also upload the death certificate if you have it. If ineligible to upload online, we'll provide instructions on how to submit a death certificate to Schwab.
Once we verify the certificate—typically within 5 business days—we'll reach out to the inheritors and estate professionals associated with the account, as appropriate, to move forward.
-
The time it will take depends on the amount and type of assets held in the account, the number of inheritors, your country's requirements, and the completion of any potential IRS forms.
Once all documents are received, most transfers are completed in a few weeks. You should review the IRS requirements that apply to your situation. Consulting a tax professional or estate planning attorney is recommended.
